If you've ever taken off a piece of jewellery at the end of the day and found a green ring on your wrist — you're not alone, and it's not your skin. It's a reaction between certain metals (usually copper alloys in low-quality pieces) and your skin's chemistry. The good news: it's completely avoidable when you know what to look for.
At OAK + EVE, every piece we make is designed for sensitive skin. Here's what that means, and how to find jewellery that works with your body — not against it.
Why Does Jewellery Turn Your Skin Green?
The culprit is almost always copper. Most costume jewellery is made from brass or other copper-based alloys, sometimes plated with a thin layer of gold or silver. When the plating wears off — which it does, often within weeks of regular wear — the copper underneath reacts with the acids and moisture in your skin to form copper salts. The result: a green stain that's harmless but annoying.
Some people also experience redness, itching, or irritation from nickel, which is commonly used in alloys and hardware. This is a true allergic reaction and can be more persistent.
What Makes Jewellery Hypoallergenic?
Hypoallergenic jewellery is made from metals that are unlikely to cause reactions. The three most common are:
14K Gold Filled: A thick layer of real 14K gold mechanically bonded to a base metal core. Not gold plated — gold filled has at least 100x more gold than plating. It's durable, tarnish-resistant, and safe for sensitive skin. This is OAK + EVE's primary metal.
Sterling Silver: 92.5% pure silver, which is naturally hypoallergenic. Occasionally contains trace nickel in the alloy, so quality matters. Our sterling silver is nickel-free.
Solid Gold: The gold standard — literally. 14K and above is very well-tolerated by sensitive skin, though it comes at a higher price point.
Gold Filled vs. Gold Plated: The Key Difference
This is the most important thing to understand when shopping for sensitive skin. Gold plated jewellery has a microscopic layer of gold (typically 0.5 microns) over a base metal. It looks identical to gold filled at first, but the plating wears away quickly — revealing the reactive metal underneath.
Gold filled has a gold layer at least 50 microns thick — roughly 100 times more than plating. It behaves like solid gold for all practical purposes and won't cause the reactions that plated jewellery does.
Every OAK + EVE piece labelled "14K Gold Filled" uses genuine 14K gold filled components. No plating. No shortcuts.

Tips for Wearing Jewellery with Sensitive Skin
- Always choose gold filled or sterling silver over gold plated or mystery metals
- Let lotion and perfume dry fully before putting on jewellery
- Pat dry after swimming or washing — moisture trapped under a bracelet can cause irritation even with quality metals
- If you notice redness, remove the piece and let the skin breathe — then check the metal composition
- When in doubt, reach out — we're always happy to confirm materials for any OAK + EVE piece
Sensitive skin shouldn't mean missing out on beautiful jewellery. It just means knowing what to look for. We've done that work for you.
