The Golden Rule: Work in Lengths
The most important principle in necklace layering is length separation. Each necklace in your stack needs to sit at a visibly different point on your chest. A good starting point:
- 14–16 inches — sits at the collarbone or just above it. This is your anchor layer.
- 18–20 inches — sits a few inches below the collarbone. Your mid-layer.
- 24–28 inches — falls at the sternum or below. Your long layer.
When necklaces sit at similar lengths, they compete, bunch, and tangle. Keep them separated and they'll do the opposite — frame each other beautifully.
Start with an Anchor Necklace
Every great stack needs a foundation. Your anchor is typically your most distinctive or meaningful piece — something with a pendant, a pearl, a charm, or a slightly bolder chain. It doesn't have to be the shortest piece, but it should be the one you're building around.

How to Stop Necklaces From Tangling
This is the question everyone asks. Here are the most effective strategies:
Use a necklace layering clasp. These small connectors attach to the backs of two or more necklaces and hold them at different lengths, preventing them from crossing. A game-changer for fine chains.
Choose necklaces with different chain styles. A box chain and a bead chain sit against each other differently than two box chains. Varied textures naturally resist tangling.
Keep the weight balanced. If one necklace has a heavy pendant, pair it with lighter chains. An uneven weight distribution is the number one cause of tangling.
Store them separately. When you take your stack off, unclasp each piece and store them separately on a jewellery stand or in individual compartments. Never coil them together.
Mixing Metals in a Necklace Stack
Gold and silver together? Absolutely yes. Mixed metals are one of 2026's biggest jewellery trends, and necklaces are the easiest place to do it.
