Freshwater Pearls vs Faux Pearls: How to Tell the Difference (And Why It Matters)

If you've ever held a pearl bracelet and wondered — is this real? — you're not alone. The pearl market is full of beautiful fakes, and most people genuinely can't tell them apart at first glance. But the difference matters more than you might think, especially when you're buying something you plan to wear every day.

At OAK + EVE, every pearl in our collection is a genuine freshwater pearl, handpicked and hand-set in our Oakville, Ontario studio. Here's how to tell what you're working with — and why it's worth knowing.

What Are Freshwater Pearls?

Freshwater pearls are real, organic gems grown inside freshwater mussels, primarily in rivers and lakes. Unlike saltwater pearls (think Akoya or South Sea), freshwater pearls are grown in larger quantities, which makes them more accessible in price — but no less real. They're composed of genuine nacre all the way through, which gives them their characteristic lustre, subtle surface texture, and soft iridescence.

Faux pearls — sometimes called imitation, simulated, or artificial pearls — are typically glass, plastic, or shell beads coated with a pearlescent paint or lacquer. They look similar to the untrained eye but behave very differently over time.

How to Tell the Difference: The Tooth Test

The most reliable at-home test is deceptively simple: gently rub the pearl along the edge of your tooth. A real freshwater pearl will feel slightly gritty or rough — that's the texture of the nacre layers. A faux pearl will feel completely smooth, almost slippery.

Other signs to look for:

  • Weight: Real pearls feel slightly heavier than plastic fakes of the same size. Glass fakes can mimic the weight better.
  • Temperature: Real pearls feel cool to the touch initially and warm up slowly against your skin. Plastic fakes warm up quickly.
  • Surface texture: Look closely — real pearls have subtle variations in shape, texture, and lustre. No two are identical. Perfect uniformity is usually a sign of imitation.
  • Lustre: Real pearls have a depth to their glow — you can almost see into them. Faux pearls tend to look more like paint: bright on the surface but flat.

Why It Matters for Everyday Jewellery

If you're buying a piece you'll wear once, the distinction matters less. But if you're buying jewellery for every day — something you'll put on in the morning and forget about — the difference between real and faux becomes very apparent over time.

Faux pearl coatings chip, peel, and dull with regular wear, especially with exposure to water, sweat, and skin oils. Real freshwater pearls, while they do require some care, develop a richer lustre over time as they're worn — a quality jewellers call the pearl's "skin."

At OAK + EVE, we design for real life. Our pearl pieces are made to be worn, not just displayed.

How to Care for Freshwater Pearls

  • Put pearls on last — after perfume, hairspray, and lotion
  • Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing
  • Store flat or in a soft pouch, away from harder metals and stones
  • Avoid prolonged soaking in water or exposure to harsh chemicals
  • Pearls love being worn — the oils from your skin actually help maintain their lustre
