The Bangle vs the Bracelet: Which One Is Right for You?

Bangle or bracelet? If you've ever stood in front of a jewellery display genuinely unsure which one you're looking at — you're not alone. The terms get used interchangeably, but they're actually quite different. Here's how to tell them apart and how to figure out which one belongs on your wrist.

The Key Difference

A bangle is a rigid, inflexible ring that slips over the hand and sits on the wrist. It doesn't have a clasp or stretchy element — it's one solid loop, usually metal, that you slide on and off over the widest part of your hand.

A bracelet is any wrist ornament that isn't rigid — it fastens with a clasp, stretches on, or ties on. Beaded bracelets, chain bracelets, cord bracelets: all bracelets.

The practical difference: a bangle makes a sound when you move (that satisfying clink). A bracelet sits quietly.

Which One Is Right for You?

Choose a bangle if: You like a minimal, low-maintenance piece. You're wearing it on its own or with one or two other bangles. You want something that feels architectural rather than stacked.

Choose a bracelet if: You're building a stack. You want something that fits your wrist precisely. You prefer comfort — a stretch bracelet is almost unnoticeable to wear.

How to Size a Bangle

Bangles are sized by the internal diameter — not wrist circumference. To find your bangle size, measure across the widest part of your hand when your fingers are pressed together. That measurement (in mm) is your bangle diameter. Most adult women wear between 60–68mm.

If you're on the border, size up — a bangle that doesn't slide over the knuckles is useless. A slightly larger bangle that sits loosely is perfectly normal.

Can You Mix Bangles and Bracelets?

Absolutely — and it looks great. The key is contrast. The clean rigid line of the St. Laurent Bangle alongside the softer texture of our 3MM Gold Filled Layering Bracelet or Lana Pearl Bracelet creates a genuinely interesting wrist stack. The bangle anchors the look; the bracelets give it warmth and texture.
